Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazed by technology and become super interested in any activity having to do with computers. My school has even invested in a program that links kids to learning sites based on their interest. However, our measly 2 computers are so old half the sites won't load properly or at all.
Based on surveys taken in the beginning and middle of every school year, my students are becoming increasingly more interested in technology.
I want to be able to fulfill this thirst for knowledge, but it doesn't seem possible with the materials available within the school. My students are extremely motivated gifted and talented first grade students in NYC. They come from various backgrounds and socioeconomic status'. They love to learn and love their school and teachers. These kids love playing Ondine learning games, taking virtual field trips of places now and long ago, and enjoy creating multi-media projects.
My Project
Last year, my students were asked to create a video or song that demonstrated their knowledge on a social studies topic. They were so excited to do this and many spent a full week to create something amazing for others to enjoy. When the children brought their projects in, I excitedly placed the DVDs and CD's into the computers and we waited and waited only to get error after error. I searched every available computer within the school and tried our disks.... Nothing. It was a week before I was able to sign out the DVD/TV so the students could see each others work. The kids were let down and every day asked when their projects would be shown. It was such a let down that the children were less excited to do something like this for a long while. With 4 up to date computers we will not only be able to enjoy each others projects, but multiple students can work at the same time on learning sites at one time, instead of waiting and waiting.
Currently, we have 2 very old computers that are no longer under warranty.
I have 33 students this year and can imagine how frustrated the children will be after they waited days to get their turn on the computer, only to acquire error signs telling them that the computer doesn't allow flash sites. Half of my teacher duties cannot even be fulfilled on these computers due to their age. By funding this proposal, my class will be able to join the technological age! Thank you for considering us!!
