Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to my program after struggling behaviorally in general education. The majority of my students are boys who cannot sit still, focus or keep their hands to themselves. Many of them have suffered some sort of trauma early in their lives which makes it difficult for them to be successful in a regular school setting.
My students are also the most amazing little children in the world.
They are hungry to learn everything that they have missed in previous years. They have so much energy and are so creative. They are all behind academically because of their behavioral and emotional issues.
My Project
My students received two Chromebooks earlier this month from DonorsChoose. They immediately began negotiating for computer time to work on coding, writing and math games. These little guys are some of the most wonderful kids you could ever meet. They have had a difficult time in school for many different reasons and come to my class feeling like failures.
They are so young and have so much potential.
With all of their feelings of defeat, I have to find creative and fun ways to engage them in learning. We do a lot of group work in reading and math so that they learn to work with others, as well as building, arts and crafts and music. My classroom is a safe haven for children who have not yet been successful in school because of behavioral and or emotional issues. This might be the first and only place where they feel success.
