Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are at-risk students who need something to look forward to when they come to school. They are minorities living in a city where 38.6% of families are below the poverty line. They are intelligent, street smart, and because of their environment outside school, they can be difficult to motivate when it comes to learning.
My students want to learn, but the limited resources our school has hinders us from teaching them in an updated and engaging way.
Some courses do not have textbooks, there are no computers in our classrooms, and for safety, there is a no cell phone policy. My students need something to look forward to when they come to school, or else they will stop coming.
My Project
My seniors are so excited to move on with their lives and for most of them, they want that to include college. Unfortunately, many don't have computers or internet at home. I have the opportunity to offer my students one on one help with college applications but we don't have the computers to apply to colleges on.
With a few computers in our classroom, we could apply to colleges and open up so many doors for these students that they wouldn't otherwise have.
After college applications are completed, we plan to use the laptops to learn online banking, budgeting and other skills young adults need to know.
