Our school is the only all-girls public middle school in the state of Kentucky. Our school celebrates its high level of cultural and socioeconomic diversity. Despite the struggles that our students encounter, they challenge us as teachers every day to give them a world-class education.
Nothing gives me greater pride than working with my students and allowing them to access an idea, a skill, or a competency that gives them inspiration for their own future goals.
I am working to help students see their potential in areas that they have never even considered possible before.
Learning, practicing, and implementing the engineering design process has been an exciting challenge for my students as they learn new ways to solve problems and interact, in a very hands-on way, with the world around them. My job is to give them the support, and the tools, to learn and cement these skills and hopefully consider a STEAM related path as they continue in school and life.
My Project
Computers, digital technology, and programming are becoming an increasingly large part of all of our lives. Yet, the IT industry is concerned because of the huge present and future lack of students who are showing an interest in these skills. In short, we all want to use advanced technology, but not enough people want to do the difficult work of making this technology come to life.
This equipment will allow students to not just learn how to program a computer, but also allow them, with their own eyes, to see how technology and programming make things really HAPPEN!!
Raspberry Pi computers, and the accessories that expand their powers, allow students to see in real time how their programming can help create real world solutions and applications. Students will learn how to build and manage a portable weather station, how to create touch screen gaming and application management devices, and see first hand how our modern technology allows us to communicate to rapidly and efficiently with people all over the globe.
There is no doubt in my mind, based on watching and teaching hundreds of students, that there is absolutely no substitute for actually using your hands and mind to make something power on and come to life. The teachable moments that come from that experience will last a lifetime. This equipment allows those lessons to happen in a very real way!
