Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious and show tremendous perseverance towards their goal of meeting mastery of learning targets in all of their classes. They embody one of our motto's, "We are crew, not passengers" by collaborating and showing compassion towards their peers if they ever feel they are being left behind. My students care deeply about their learning and personal growth so that they can meet their big goal - college.
Their curiosity and dedication to their understanding of all subjects is inspiring.
My students live in the densely populated neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. They all qualify for free lunch based on Federal standards of poverty. Most speak a language other than English at home, and a significant number of my students have special education services as part of their educational plan. Upon entering our middle school in 6th grade, students are at least 2 years behind in reading and mathematics. They all plan to (and will) attend
My Project
My students need access to laptops every single day. They need to learn how to code, conduct research, and type essays and lab reports. They also need to be familiar with platforms that are used in the professional world. Outlets for creativity that pens and paper cannot provide are essential. We need to fully integrate technology into the classroom in order for my students to compete in our fast-changing, global society.
Our current laptops are 10 years old and unreliable.
My students deserve better. These computers will provide equity of opportunity and access. Students will use these laptops for a introduction to computational media class, as well as outlets for project-based learning.
