Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a part of the International Baccalaureate Program. It is a challenging two-year program that incorporates college-level curriculum with a service component.
Our school is predominately classified as an economically-disadvantaged population but my kids have chosen to challenge themselves in this program to ensure a bright future.
The program emphasizes student-led learning that focuses on a global perspective, and for most of my students, this is a unique experience. My kids have not had all the privileges that some students have, but they are willing to work very hard to be successful in college and in their careers.
My Project
Our school was already limited in the availability of computers for student use as our growth is larger than our building space. My class room is now in a portable and the school had to convert the computer labs to class room space.
Houston flooding from Hurricane Harvey has created an unforeseen crisis for my students; many lost the only available means of technology in the devastating floods.
This will create even more challenges to an already chaotic start to the school year. Recovery has been slow for many of my students. Students lost many material possessions--specifically their laptops and tablets. During the school day, there are some opportunities to have access to computers, but for many in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, they no longer have access.
My hope is to offer my students laptops to check out for for the nights/weekends in order to complete assignments outside of the school day. I am slowly building an inventory to offer one to every student in need. I am very close to achieving this goal.
