Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend an urban Title I high school in Chattanooga that is brimming with brilliant students who face incredible obstacles to their success. These bright-eyed students are full of vim and vigor every day and work hard to grow as scholars. Our school has had the wonderful opportunity to welcome many new refugees and immigrants that have, in many cases, a very limited education. All of these changes have introduced new challenges to the school, especially in the area of finances and resources.
Currently, we have more students than we do supplies, which is causing it to be harder to support and encourage these new students as they arrive.
My high school used to be a 1:1 school and now a lot of classes lack chromebooks, which limits the teacher's ability to engage students and to provide them with the best resources. My students want to do their best, but with this significant lack in their education, they don't always have what they need to be successful. My students are truly fantastic and to know them is to love them!
My Project
Computers play a huge role in the workplace today. To equip students with the 21st century skills that they need, it is absolutely necessary that they learn to type and conduct research on computers.
Unfortunately, due to the shortage of computers that my school has, students are limited in their ability to practice their typing and access research.
As a teacher, I am limited in the projects I can assign and activities that I can do to increase engagement. Additional computers would increase student engagement by providing differentiation through the use of apps that students can use to express their learning like Padlet, Google Slides, and Prezi. Additional chromebooks would also help me save on copies, because I often go over my allotted copies for the month with all the copies that I have to make since they can't access the materials online.
