A media classroom without media? My classroom serves as the computer lab for the school and is where the computer media classes are taught, but the laptops we have to use don't have the specifications to be used in a cyber security competition we'd like to compete in.
My students are 7th and 8th graders who come from working families in a farm and oil-surrounded area.
Our school prides ourselves on creating a community for the students where everyone can feel comfortable and where school meets home. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds, from upper middle class to the poorest students. We strive to create a common, comfortable atmosphere for all students where they want to come to school to learn.
My Project
I have some very talented students who would love to learn more about IT professionals and their jobs. A national program allows students to learn about cyber security and use their skills in a competition against other students their age. Unfortunately, though, the laptop computers we have to use don't have the technical specifications necessary to be able to compete. We need a computer with higher technical specifications and running Windows in order to advance students' skills in IT so they can compete nationally.
Imagine if my students had the technology necessary to compete in this contest, learn different types of computer skills and even advance in the competition to win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
to compete in the national finals, and all because donors had a heart to get them the right kind of computer. This is a learning experience my students will never forget.
