Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine an urban school with abandoned train tracks and an unpleasant refuse plant across the street. Our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of our school. Despite the many problems they face, I am looking to keep my students motivated to master Spanish via meaningful learning experiences and authentic student driven projects.

My students, after facing much misfortune and hardship, have learned to become resilient and deserve to have the same resources others schools have.

My Project

Your gracious donation will help me better implement our Computer Science curriculum to my high need students who do not have much access to technology or their own supplies. There is a severe gap in minorities and women in the Computer Science field.

The items requested will help provide a more equitable experience for all students and foster an inquiry based learning journey as they learn about various Computer Science concepts.

For example, each unit introduces on concepts that then builds upon another. The Koolaid and PBJ items are used to highlight the importance of detailed step by step instructions (just like in a computer program) to make "The Perfect Sandwich" or "Perfect Koolaid". The Legos and blocks will be used to introduce binary numbers and for tower building activities related to problem solving skills. The posts cards will be used to send secret messages in binary code that will be mailed to one another to solve. The deck of cards and bags will be used for a sorting activities while the robots will be programmed by students to complete a variety of tasks.

This activities along with others will allow student to take ownership of their own learning while having a more positive interaction with Computer Science. This in turn will inspire them to continue to study this content and even pursue a career in Computer Science.
