Students in my Computer Repair class are enthusiastic and eager to learn about all aspects of computing from building a computer to the Internet of Things. Most don't have their own computers to tinker with and we must be creative to find projects to allow them to learn and practice new skills from their district-provided Chromebooks while in COVID required Distance Learning at home. They are inquisitive and regularly ask about ideas they have to push the limits to enable them to learn more.
These students are all eager to learn and are consistently in class, doing assignments early, and asking what more they can do.
In a distance learning environment, it is a challenge to motivate students. Many students just don't bother showing up to class. However, that is not the case with these students.
My Project
Working from home during COVID distance learning makes hands-on computer repair activities challenging. This project will touch on multiple areas of our computer repair course, giving hands-on opportunities while students are working at home.
Using a combination of 3D printed parts and purchased components, students will build their own mini 3D printers, learning safety, assembly, and programming machine boards.
Students will use these printers for learning 3D design later in the course. The multiple opportunities for learning, engagement, and creativity make this project a win for students and teachers alike.
