Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have been exposed to computer programming through the Hour of Code, Code Academy, and iPad apps. Now it's time to create their own programs.
I teach third grade in a primarily immigrant and working class neighborhood in southern California.
Most of my students are learning English as a second language, a couple of them are receiving special education, speech, and intervention services, and ALL of them love to learn.
My Project
My third graders have enjoyed learning about computer programming. One of their favorite apps on the iPad is Kodable, which teaches them basic coding skills and concepts. They have so much fun with it they don't realize they are learning. Now I want to introduce some robots into the classroom. Dot and Dash, Sphero 2.0, and Orbotix Ollie can be programmed to move and perform tasks based on the computer programming that the students create.
My students all have had experience making things move on an iPad screen based on the programming they created.
With the addition of these robots into our third grade class my students will be able to learn how the computer code they create can control physical objects. Now that will be amazing!
