Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a middle school ESL teacher in South-Central Los Angeles, I have been witness to the lack of access to technology that my students possess. Students are seldom taught basic computer skills such as typing, word processing, and presentation techniques, and this is unfortunately due to the scarcity of resources and programs that teach these skills. In an effort to bridge this gap, I have designed a technology program that will target my ESL students, who may otherwise not be afforded an opportunity to foster computer skills. This program will be taught by me, and will be carried out as an after school program and an in-school homeroom elective during the 2006/07 school year involving around 50 students. While some computers have already been designated for student use, what I lack is a computer that I can use to effectively present technology lessons to the students.
With a Toshiba Portege Notebook, I would be able to do things essential to this program. I would not only be able to present technology lessons to students, but would also be able to make lessons come alive with the writable screen, which would allow me to direct students effectively as they learn new technological abilities. Eventually, students themselves could learn to use such features on the computer allowing them to present to their peers as well.
The objectives of this program include the following: efficient typing skills, computer literacy in word processing and document design, presentation skills using PowerPoint, and basic video editing. In a world economy that increasingly demands technological aptitude in order to be competitive in the workforce, I strongly believe that my ESL students will greatly benefit from this program, and future technology programs I plan to teach. With an effective presentation tool such as the aforementioned computer, I will be able to deliver this material in an even more advantageous way so that my students can acquire these essential skills.
