Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This fall my students began utilizing a new online English Language Arts curriculum in my 7th grade Language Arts classroom of 4 periods. Many of them don't have access to either individual earbuds or earphones.
I teach 7th grade social studies in a low-income middle school in central Washington state.
The majority of our students coming from low-income households do not have access to listening devices and if they do are unable to share due to sanitary reasons.
My Project
Last year was a struggle as our school as transitioned to using laptop computers for many of the students assignments. There were two problems that arose: the laptops internal mouse were at times difficult to use and listening to videos from my desktop computer only reached a few groups located right in front of them.
Last year I noticed that when my students used the district laptops that some of the internal mice were really sensitive and skipped screens at times.
By getting individual plug-in mice, this should resolve that problem. In addition, it has been relatively difficult for my students that are sitting far away from where the computer speakers are located that are attached to my desktop computer to hear. Having speakers in all four corners of the room will alleviate this problem.
To create responsibility for individual students, each one will be assigned a mouse according to their classroom student number along with their computer number. This will create the accountability for each student for them to take care of the assigned computer equipment. In each period, I have a student that is assigned the computer handler job who will handle the assigned computers along with the computer mice.
