I serve at a Title I school in a large city in Pennsylvania working to unlock the potential of some of the city's most underserved youth who hail from neighborhoods all over the city. Where many schools have failed, our school has achieved excellence for our children through a rigorous college preparatory program and a commitment to peace and nonviolence in our community, both within our walls and beyond.
The environment our school provides is one in which our students feel safe enough to take the risks necessary for learning.
By providing a safe place and encouraging individuality, students achieve both academic and emotional growth to prepare them for the challenges they will face in college and beyond.
By engaging with our community, my students are disproving stereotypes and improving their neighborhoods. Because of our high standards and our commitment to each individual student’s potential, we are closing the gap between educational experiences that may have failed our children in the past and the incredible opportunities that lie ahead.
My Project
I want to ensure my students are successful both inside and outside of school. In this time of Covid-19 and distance learning, I hope that this project can support both the students and myself as we continue to adapt to the changes in the world.
The set of computer mice and headphones will be available for students who require or prefer them when engaging with our daily virtual classroom lessons and discussions.
The computer mice will help students to easier navigate the drawing and graphing tools we use when working together virtually on math tasks over Zoom via Peardeck and other live/real-time, hands-on math/educational platforms. The Chromebook and laptoop trackpads can be frustrating, as I am sure many of us are well aware!
Furthermore, many of my students are working along side of other school-aged siblings, and/or parents and caregivers working from home. A pair of comfy headphones can help minimize background noise/distractions; a best-case scenario for everyone else on the zoom call, too!
I did recently receive donation of 20 sets of headphones-THANK YOU!
I was a tad too modest when I made this initial request. I teach over 50 students, and while many of them have their own head-set, I under-estimated the number of students who still currently do not (and have since requested a pair, if possible). Thank you again!
