Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second year mathematics teacher at M.S. 118 in the Bronx, New York. I teach half of the general education eighth graders at the school (about 90 students). Ninety five percent of the students I teach receive free breakfast and lunch at the school. On last year's city wide mathematics exam, sixty percent of my students scored level 1 (the lowest level of 4), thirty percent scored level 2 (below standards) and only ten percent of my students scored level 3 (at grade level). My students are far behind in their mathematics education. My hope is that with support from Donors Choose, I will be able to make a measurable impact on my students' performance level.
My ability to communicate and demonstrate sound mathematical practice would be greatly enhanced with the use of a notebook computer and projector in the classroom. My school already has a few projectors, so I am asking that a donor may contribute a notebook computer to my classroom. Incorporating computer technology in my class would help to maintain student interest, would add visual reference to more abstract concepts, and would allow me to closely replicate the types of questions that have become more common on the city's standardized tests.
With a notebook computer I would be able to take advantage of resources, both on the Internet and included with the most recent Impact Mathematics package, that I am currently unable to utilize. A notebook computer and projector would allow me to present numerous word problems and multiple-choice questions without making hundreds of photocopies. I would like to use the computer to model organized, step-by-step solutions to extended response questions. With the increased focus on written responses to mathematical problems, I would like to be able to show my students what a well-written response looks like.
I have selected a reasonably priced Ibook from Apple, which is the brand of computer most used at my school. The computer would be an addition to my classroom that my students and I would both greatly appreciate.
