My students need two mini netbooks, four headphones, and a spliter to help them gain important literacy skills.
Do you love reading? Did you grow up with people reading stories to you? Many of my students would not be able to answer "Yes" to those questions. I would like to try to change that, but I need some help.
My students are wonderful.
I have 22 second-graders this year, with a whole range of different skills and talents. I teach in a collaborative team teaching classroom in a large urban city. I am a special education teacher who shares a class with a general education teacher. The two of us work together to teach a class with a mix of general education students, as well as those with special needs. My students are working at many different levels, but they are also learning how to work together. It is hard for seven-year-olds to understand and appreciate differences, but I see it starting to happen. In my class everyone works for their own "personal best." I recently got a computer for my students through this site. I am very excited about using it with my students, who would all get time on it. It made me realize much more fully how computers can greatly help my students.
I am requesting two netbook computers with headphones. I am a bit hesitant to ask for such expensive materials, but I am confident that the technology would greatly help my students. With these materials, my students would be able to listen to stories being read while following along word-for-word. The headphone splitters would allow them to have a social component to their reading practice, as they could share a computer with a classmate and each be able to hear. These two computers and headphone sets can make a huge impact on my students this year, and for years to come.
Second grade is a critical time period.
Children are just beginning to take note of similarities and differences. Many struggling readers start to give up on themselves thinking that they will never be able to read as well as their classmates. These computers and headphones could be just the support and reinforcement that they need to keep on practicing reading every day.
