Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I started an after school computer coding club to teach basic programming to kids that might be interest in a future career in technology. The little code club has become one of the most popular extracurricular activities at the school. It now spans two days and four grade levels!

Our club consists of 70 computer programmers from 3rd grade to 6th grade that attend a Title 1 public elementary school in California.

The school has a very diverse population and 75% of the population is English Language Learners. Our rigorous curriculum focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Although our focus is STEM, we never neglect the arts and try to incorporate music and visual art in all areas. These kids are designing games, telling stories and animating their own digital cartoons using the Scratch computer programming language that was developed by MIT.

The technology jobs that these students will apply for as adults have not been invented yet. They do not know a world without Facebook or YouTube. The future is a digital world. These kids will be fluent in multiple languages, include the language of technology.

My Project

I am requesting 30 computer mice and 27 headphones to use in our after school coding club as we learn to write computer code using Scratch to program games, animation and digital narrative stories. We have two separate clubs (grades 3-6) that will share the computer accessories to easily maneuver Scratch code blocks on the screen and add sound effects, music, and dialogue to their projects.

Your donation will make computer programming more accessible for kids.

We are using these tools to generate projects that cross all curriculum. These kids are highly motivated to learn a computer language. Scratch allows them to showcase their learning by telling an interactive, digital narrative or developing critical thinking skills in order to program a responsive video game. This is the introduction to computer programming that will develop into the skills needed for collegiate and professional coding. This is 21st century learning in a modern classroom. Your donation will make this project accessible to all students.
