Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the technology teacher at an elementary school with over 700 hardworking, silly, sometimes challenging but always amazing students in a metropolitan city close to the nation’s capital. They love to work with hands-on activities, collaborate with peers online or in person. Our students enjoy engaging online coding activities like the ones found on Code.org or other coding sites. My students do not respond as positively to worksheets or seat work activities as they do to writing algorithms for tools such as Code and Go Mice that teach them math concepts such as addition, subtraction and multiplication. My students love to work in centers or share their ideas online to learn new concepts. I strive to make my classroom a fun and exciting learning environment.
I was selected to be a Computer Science instructor this school year and have spent the summer finding ways to integrate computer science standards into our math curriculum.
The focus of my project is to obtain Code and Go Mice so we can use them in our technology center. They will work on writing algorithms with the Code & Go Mice that will help them understand different math concepts in their curriculum.
My Project
Students will create algorithms to manipulate the Code and Go Mice through mazes to help them understand the process of creating computer programs. Students will also use the Code and Go Mice on a number line to help them understand addition and subtraction through writing algorithms. Example: Move 8 spaces forward and 4 backwards to equal 4.
Students in grades Pre-K-second will use the Mice to better understand basic computer science concepts.
The Code and Go Mice can be programed to moved forward, backward, left and right to simulate how Coding in computer programs works.
We have used them successfully in the past to convey these concepts.
