This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom currently has both laptop computers and desktop computers thanks to DonorsChoose and the generosity of donors like you. However, we are still short of having a computer for every student.
Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in a rough neighborhood, but my students travel from all over the South Side and beyond to attend.
My students are 71% African-American and 25% Hispanic, and an overwhelming majority are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. They are driven and motivated; they like to explore scientific concepts and to challenge themselves in every way possible.
My Project
My students are college bound and our high school has a rigorous STEM curriculum to prepare them for college. In chemistry, our students must complete lab reports that require them to organize data in tables and graphs constructed using a computer. My students need access to laptops during class so they can immediately analyze data they've acquired. Laptops for every student will also allow my students access to a variety of simulations that will help them to visualize concepts in chemistry such as subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons), things that otherwise cannot be seen on a macro scale.
Providing a laptop to each student in our chemistry class will allow my students to perform in-class data analysis.
Data analysis becomes increasingly important as they advance through our school's science curriculum from chemistry on to physics then on to advanced placement courses in their senior year.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Namowicz and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
