Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school where 95% of our students are economically disadvantaged and 75% of them come from homes where English isn't spoken, read or written.
Many of our parents work more than one job and our students lack many life experiences that other children their age have.
Our staff always has a smile on their face and are willing to help each other and all the students. The children are excited to come to school because they feel the love from our wonderful educators. You would never know that the children did not eat dinner last night, that the rain leaked into their house, or that they slept on the floor because there are two other families living with them. Sadly, this is how most of our families live.
It is my goal to provide our students with everything they need to succeed in life no matter what their circumstance is.
My Project
I just became a Reading Coach this year and I work with different groups of students and help teachers. I need vocabulary and comprehension activities that will engage and challenge our students. During the Guided Reading block, our students rotate to different learning centers while the teachers focus on small group reading instruction. I need the centers to reinforce the English Language Arts standards that our students are expected to know to become excellent readers and writers. I chose these activities because they reach every learning style. They are hands-on for our kinesthetic learners and they include pictures and words for our visual and English language learners. The students listen to each other read the questions and explain their answers which helps the auditory learners. Games are the perfect teaching tool for this literacy block because the students are fully engaged which decreases behavior problems, they are having fun while they are learning to read and write which increases comprehension, and the students are helping and challenging each other which improves their social skills. The games will be shared among our primary classrooms.
