This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the reading intervention teacher at my Title I school, I see the academic loss that the pandemic caused primarily in our minority students. Although it is a racially diverse school, my intervention groups are representative of the school population. The need for a reading intervention is so great that I was pulled from teaching kindergarten to teaching basic reading skills to all grade levels.

My 3-5 students need learning materials to help them reach benchmark in reading.

I've been teaching TK-2 for over 20 years; therefore, I lack supplemental materials for older students.

My Project

These essential materials will help my students build their comprehension skills. In my 30 minute intervention sessions we don't have time to read entire stories and check for understanding.

I picture my students reading the passage, having a conversation about it with their classmates, and answering comprehension questions in our allotted time.

Unfortunately with schooling from home, students lost the ability to stay engaged in reading long stories. I truly believe that with short passages, they will slowly learn to love books and stories. I just have to build their reading and comprehension stamina.
