My students need headphones, idiom pocket chart, language cards and reading highlighter to boost their language and comprehension skills both in the classroom and out in the real world!
I have been blessed with an amazing class of special learners. We are a small (but growing!), self-contained class of five middle-school age students working hard at reinforcing functional academics and learning life skills. My students pull from a lower-income district and are multiply disabled. Often, these children do not have a lot of experience in the world around them. As middle school students, it is time to start preparing them for life beyond school.
For students who don't often experience the world outside their neighborhoods, having access to technology in the classroom will open their eyes to what possibilities may await them in the future.
My Project
I am so fortunate to be working with my district this year to build a BRAND NEW Functional Academics/Life Skills program for Middle School special education students.
We are working hard to pull together all the pieces we need to make this growing program a success, but an essential element is COMPREHENSION-of what they read and what they hear both in school and in the world around them.
My students need headphones in the classroom to support differentiated, independent work to meet the range of their abilities and their interests. There are numerous apps on iPads that will reinforce the everyday language and comprehension skills my students so desperately need. Additional noise in a special education classroom is extremely distracting-headphones are vital for the success of all of my students.
Additionally, the Idiom pocket chart, language cards, and reading highlighter will encourage my students to participate more fully and with greater understanding during Language Arts instruction. All of these items would be great additions to our Special Needs classroom!
