We are a small rural school in central NH serving two towns. We have world language classes in our district formally starting in fifth grade. We hope to expand it to the elementary level someday. Our students are very understanding as we have a large special needs population. I took a group traveling to Costa Rica. We were paired with another school group with students with learning difficulties. Our student participation in the unified sports program prepared them to assist and encourage the other group. I use this analogy for studying world languages. Language learning helps to be more open minded and accepting of learning styles, strengths, and differences.
My Project
Scholastic magazines challenge readers with comprehensible input. Learning isn't always with a sequential textbook format. People learn from comprehensible exposure. Interesting stories are what we remember. Learning should be enjoyable and accessible. Reading their magazines accomplishes that. It would be helpful to provide another resource for students to be successful.
Scholastic magazines help students build literacy skills with interesting pop culture features.
They include vocabulary and comprehension checks to show understanding. Eventually, this input turns to output. As comfort level increases, showing understanding and engaging with the text, students will become better at interpretive skills, broadening cultural awareness and communicating.
