Composting: Let's Break It Down!

My students need a composting bin, a thermometer to monitor the temperature of our compost, and a few books to help us learn about the magic (and science) of composting.

My Students

My students are curious little problem solvers! They are 5-6 years old and part of a culturally diverse and dynamic classroom. They are risk takers who learn from mistakes and enjoy encouraging their peers to succeed. They not only love learning from direct instruction but love to observe, investigate and demonstrate their understanding of content all by themselves! They devour new games, love to be challenged, and enjoy various types of materials. They learn best by doing and by using hands-on materials.

My Project

We have a huge school and we make a lot of waste. We are already recycling, but by adding composting to our mix we will be about to reduce the amount of waste we produce and teach our students the benefits of composting by using the soil in our own existing school gardens.

What kid doesn't love a good worm?

Our students will have the opportunity to see these critters in action as they break down our green and brown materials right before our eyes! They will be disgusted, but amazed! That's a great combination for children of any age!
