"Worms eat our garbage???" was the question a student asked when we spoke about composting in class. All the students were interested in the concept and wanted to know more about it.
My students typically come from low socio-economic backgrounds and the majority of them have learning disabilities.
They didn't like science when they first came into my classroom this year, but that has changed. I try to encourage them to not only do their best but to focus on things that really interest them. When we started speaking about composting and worms eating our garbage that peaked their interest. They wanted to see it happen!
My Project
The Worm Composter Kit will help my student-initiated project. They said that after they learn about composting in class they would like to do a school wide awareness about composting. Their idea was to have students collect any garbage from the cafeteria that can be composted and eventually use it in a garden outside of the school. I originally had to tell students that I wasn't sure we could get the money to fund a composting kit because of all the budget cuts this year. Then I saw on donorschoose.org that donors could get a match from ABC Family. This goes along with the ABC Family student-initiated project match offering.
This project would have a huge impact, not on just my students, but on the entire school.
Hopefully students will use what they've learned here and compost at home. It's so much more environmentally friendly and easy to do. Then they will be able to start a garden at home and use their own garbage to fertilize it!
