Help me give my students real life experience with reusing. The ingredients for the compost tumbler will come from breakfast in the classroom and lunch waste. We will make soil to put in our school garden.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly first generation to college. Our school is a school for advanced studies which provides accelerated curriculum to English Language Learners who would not typically get access in a traditional school. We are also a AVID Site of Distinction, which basically means our whole school works toward college readiness.
Our student want to go to college.
They have gotten into all 9 UCs, many Cal States and several private school. The students are involved in sports, volunteer opportunities, leadership development and building community.
My Project
An after school club around sustainability will be in charge of maintaining the compost. All of the students will use gardening gloves when maintaining the compost pile and taking samples for experiments. All of the school will donate food into the compost pile.
The earthworms will provide a real life example of decomposers in the cycling of matter on Earth.
My biology classes will use the compost pile to collect data around cellular respiration of the earthworms using our CO2 probes. We also have temperature probes to study how temperature changes through the compost cycle. The students are very excited to help reduce trash in landfill.
