My students need three rotating compost bins to enhance our garden program, giving them opportunities to plant, harvest and eat their way to sustainable living.
Our students come from neighborhood families, families who live in the inner city and outside areas and participate in the VEEP busing and Choice Program, families designated as low income households, and military families. Our school site's focus is on science and mathematics. In addition to classroom instruction, all students participate in our well-developed garden program, by planting crops, harvesting them and preparing the produce for eating. Teaching kids sustainable habits is essential in their education and preparing students for the future.
Giving students the opportunity to grow food and learn to prepare and eat it is essential to educate children on sustainable living and healthy eating habits.
Our district has experienced major budget cuts in spending, and supplies for our garden program are limited.
Providing students with the physical tools they need will improve instruction, enable students to engage in hands-on activities and projects to further their experiences in preparing for a future in this ever changing world.
My Project
Our school has an established gardening program for all students in grades K through 5. Currently we have a compost bin that was built out of wood and sits on the ground. Over time this bin has attracted rabbits, mice and other varmints that pose a threat to the sanitation and safety of our garden. It is also difficult to churn the compost and demands heavy physical labor.
If our students receive three new rotating plastic compost bins, it will enable them to plant more frequently in the limits of one school year.
It will be elevate off of the ground and will eliminate varmints who now occupy the garden (and need to relocate) making it safe for children to enjoy. The rotating compost bins enrich soil at a faster rate, so students have more opportunities to plant and harvest food more frequently and with less effort.
Students who learn where food comes from and how to produce it develop better eating choices and healthy habits. Educating children on healthy eating and sustainable food supplies is also critical in our world, as food supplies are compromised in our every changing world and climate.
