My students attend the magnet program in an urban school where 100% of the students qualify for free lunch. Like most, they have drawn inward in response to all that has happened surrounding COVID. Last year's 9th graders were so quiet and shy that they did not talk amongst themselves when the teachers were moving between classrooms. Even by the end of the year, they remained more of a group of individuals in a space than a class--with two exceptions. I would like to offer this year’s students additional resources, particularly those that will foster deeper engagement.
The book that I have chosen is almost guaranteed to spark interest, discussion, and creative responses as it is a Teacher's Pick and a New York Times bestseller.
The novel offers a sustained focus for reading and writing that I do not currently have, as we rely on shorter readings that can be duplicated from the internet. Having a book to hold in their hands would be a wonderful treat, and I would be very grateful for the richness that each would bring to the course.
My Project
Love, Hate, and Other Filters explores how a 17 year old Muslim American teen navigates the traditional Indian values of her parents to determine what dreams will guide her own life. This "coming of age" novel offers commentary on conditions for Muslim Americans post 9/11.
Students would have a novel that explores many dimensions of love that would center our discussion of how love can best be reconceptualized today.
They would be responding to a book that has been widely praised, which models effective and engaging writing. The 9th grade composition course would be so improved by having this book as a guide for students to expand their writing practices.
