Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 7th graders who qualify for special education services at a preK to 12 charter school in Washington, DC. Our school community hails from all quadrants of the city, and represents a wide range of ethnic, linguistic, racial, religious, and socio-economic groups. In the middle school, our students are: 43% Latino, 42% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, and 4% Multi-race/other. Many also represent high-need populations: 72% qualify for free or reduced-price meals; 11% are English Learners, and 15% receive special education services.
My students are learning to persevere.
My students are a small group of 7th graders with a history of struggles with math. They have a range of disabilities. Some struggle to retain concepts or skills in their memory. Some frustrate easily; others worry about being laughed at or judged for not catching on quickly. Together, we are building a community where it is safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and help each other. We often talk about several Mathematical Practices in the Common Core Standards, especially "Understand and Persevere", "Model with Mathematics", and "Attend to Precision".
My Project
This year, my students and I have explored multiplication tables, number lines, visual models, and four-function calculators as tools to support mathematical problem solving. Recently, we learned that as 7th graders, they have access to a more advanced calculator - with additional functions - on standardized tests. However, a calculator is only as good as the information you put into it, and my students do not yet know how to use this technology.
The TI-15 Scientific Calculator will allow students to do different kinds of calculations, once they know how to use it!
The TI-15 has a two-row display, so students can enter fractions in the correct format. They can work with mixed numbers. They can enter negative integers. TI has an entire manual for the calculator on-line, but we need time to read it, digest it, and practice! Help us purchase a small (we only need 5) set of TI-15 calculators now so we have plenty of time to learn to use them before PARCC season starts.
