Our students come a from a diverse area in central New Jersey. They come from various economic backgrounds. Many of the students qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Many also attend before and after school. Either way, they all come to school with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to learn. They are all enthusiastic learners and kind children and we want to have all the supplies necessary for them to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
Children learn to become better readers by practicing reading. We practice reading daily during our literacy block. In reader's workshop, our students engage in various activities that strengthen our reading. One very important part of reader's workshop is our guided reading. During guided reading, the students work with us in small groups so that we can identify strengths and weaknesses within their reading in order to make them better readers.
Students are more likely to be engaged in their texts if they are enjoying what they are reading!
This is where our project comes into play. Our students need more varied types of guided reading books to supplement our small group instruction. If they are more engaged readers, they are more likely to become better and stronger readers.
