I recently introduced the AP Government and Politics course to my High School. The students who take this course come from a variety of skill sets. The class is split evenly between students who have followed a traditional Honors to AP track and students who decided this was their opportunity to challenge themselves.
By challenging themselves with this AP course, my students have chosen to improve their understanding of the government and improve their ability to actively contribute to their local, state, and national communities in a meaningful way.
My Project
Currently, students in my class must share textbooks, or check them out from me on a nightly basis to then bring them back to me the next day. Having the check-out procedure precludes me from assigning meaningful reading assignments for homework. All reading for my class has to currently be done in-class.
Having a full class set of textbooks will enable my students to read up on civics concepts at home to be prepared to discuss them in class, which will improve their overall retention of the material.
Discussion of the concepts we cover will increase the dosage of content and help facilitate structured academic conversation, as well as friendly academic controversy as students are able to spend more time with and develop their interpretations of the material while reading and processing outside the 55 minutes I see them daily.
