My students each need dry erase markers, erasers, and white board cleaner to actively participate during history class.

I teach 5th grade social studies at an inner-city school. All of my students are minorities and all have come to my charter school from failing schools. In order to enroll, students must be "below proficient" on their state standardized exams. The mission of my school is to prepare all students for the college of their choice. With kids coming in the 5th grade performing mostly at a 2nd or 3rd grade level, we work very hard to succeed. Our students attend school for extended hours to make-up pre-requisite skills. By high school, most of my students will be able to get into any school in the city, state, or country.
My school has five values of success: scholarship, teamwork, integrity, perseverance, and fun. In every class, the teachers try to incorporate some of the last value. The students love, love, love to write on the white boards! It is a great way for the students to be mobile and engaged in the class. It also stirs up a nice amount of competition!
I have the white boards - one for each student. But my students need the markers and other accessories to truly utilize them. This project will allow the students to show what they have learned at any time. It will also allow me to continually evaluate where they are. White boards are a great way to do pop quizzes, team games, individual games, as well as individual student feedback.
Your gift to my students will enhance our classroom experience. It will provide my students with a more individualized education that will prepare them for college and the world beyond. White board markers may seem insignificant, but they can help to enforce spelling, reading comprehension, historical ideals, and include a good dosage of fun!
