I am so excited to have the privilege of welcoming a new class of kindergarten students to a year bound to be full of fun, learning and lots of growth! My kindergarteners are dynamic; their zest for learning and life motivates me to provide the most engaging educational experiences possible for them during each and every school day! These bright and busy boys and girls each come to our classroom with different learning styles and will access a multitude of tools daily to support them in being the strongest and most successful learners they can be!
My Project
In our kindergarten classroom, we use books to support our learning of important information each and every day. My little learners love to visit our classroom library and explore the pages of self-selected books. Non-fiction books about animals have consistently been amongst the most sought after by my students and, as a result, are ones that I am always looking to add to our library for their enjoyment as blossoming readers.
With this project, I strive to bring the National Geographic Kids Pre-Reader series to our classroom library.
Not only will these books support the development of crucial early literacy skills in a high-interest way, they will also nurture compassion and empathy for animals in the hearts and minds of each of my students. As they read and learn more about the animals in these books, my students will have the opportunity to envision ways that they can be caretakers of other living things around them. I have also requested the books "Me... Jane" and "Jane Goodall: Champion for Chimpanzees" so that my students can learn about a real-life role model who embodies the meaning of compassion -- especially toward animals.
My hope is that my kindergarteners will be able to read these books for pure enjoyment, during centers to describe their learning using pictures, labels and writing or as a source of inspiration for their dramatic play during choice time. With your support, I can continue to pique my students' interests in non-fiction topics while also supporting them in becoming global citizens who respect all living things!
