Long before there were computers and calculators, mathematicians were able to construct a perfect right angle with only a compass and a straight edge. As part of our geometry class, we have the students redo these constructions so they get a sense of how ancient mathematicians practiced their discipline. Constructions are a tactile way of learning deductive logic, and an excellent way to hook our more kinesthetic learners. The geometry teachers have sprinkled constructions throughout the year. Unfortunately, this means the students need to carry compasses in their backpacks for one day a month. The compasses often break, and with their sharp points, sometimes poke holes in things. Ideally, each geometry teacher would have a class set of compasses and the students could keep their own at home for homework. Thank you very much.
