Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Si se puede" is the slogan we have in my transitional bilingual classroom in New Jersey. By providing opportunities for students of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, these curious learners can believe that their goals are possible to achieve.
All my students have immigrated to the United States to access both the economic and educational advantages that exist here.
Their limited English proficiency is not limiting their desire to learn. They are eager to learn the required curriculum as they are developing skills in the English language.
These students have been in the country for no more than three years, and most have been here for less than a year. It is important that they participate in engaging and authentic activities to acquire their new language with confidence. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with an educational environment that fosters this growth!
My Project
Since students are learning remotely, they need to have available materials that can help them understand the various concepts related to fractions. In this project the focus is on materials that can help them to compare and make fractions with the same denominator.
In order to grasp complex math concepts, students need to begin with concrete models then work abstractly.
Using erasable number lines and comparable flip charts students have a scaffold available that will assist them as they work towards mastering the more abstract computations they are expected to compute. By allowing various methods of learning students will have more opportunities for success!
