My Students
My classroom is comprised of a mixture of personalities and academic skills. I teach 9th-grade English Language Arts. They are first year high schoolers coming in scared, nervous and eager to learn, but most dislike reading.
My students come from various backgrounds with different levels of support at home.
One thing they all have in common is the commitments outside if the school day. Reading for pleasure has taken a backseat to technology and those outside commitments. Without support at home to encourage reading it must be done in class. We need an engaging novel with multiple take aways.
My Project
Fahrenheit 451 has been placed in our 9th-grade curriculum for next year. I am excited to share this fiction with my students because the premise of the fiction is becoming reality.
Aside from the skills the novel naturally lends itself to, we can explore how Montag's reality is becoming ours.
The novel lends itself to exploring point of view, character development, cause and effect and so on. I also want my students to explore how the printed word was banned and television (technology) is used as mind control. We will explore how losing the written word removes creativity and freedom of thought and how that has an effect on people.
