My Students
My students are sixth, seventh and eighth graders in a small, rural middle school.
Our 325 students range from the mentally impaired and learning disabled to gifted with every ability level inbetween.
They all are excited about learning, however, and want to be able to do everything larger schools do.
We get no money for supplies, consumables, or new equipment. Everything we get has to come from grants or fundraisers. With every department, music group and athletic team raising funds, it becomes very difficult for the community to support all of our needs.
My Project
My students need the chance to see what body systems actually look like. There's a big difference between diagrams and the real thing. The dissection they complete in my class is often the only dissection some of my students will complete. It gives them a realistic view of all the systems we study and gives me an opportunity to discuss diseases of each system with them.
We would like to dissect a sheep's heart, a sheep's eye (which we cover in two separate units, once in anatomy and once in our unit on waves) and for our final project, a bullfrog.
We ordered materials earlier, but I've recently learned I'll be teaching an additional class and need more supplies for them!
