This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At our school our students come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.
They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!
They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!
My Project
Every year our students work hard from the beginning of the school year until our winter break! Right before winter break we celebrate all of our students' hard work as readers by allowing them to enjoy a Pajama Read Aloud Day! On this day our students get to wear their favorite pajamas while they engage in a read aloud with their teacher, create a craft around the book, and then compare and contrast the book with the movie version! This year we want to continue to provide our students with exciting book and movie pairs to compare and contrast! Having resources such as Paddington, Shrek, Alexander and the Terrible Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Chicken Little will help us continue to engage our students in what is becoming a yearly tradition! Further, we want to continue to be able to provide our teachers with the craft supplies (such as paper plates, construction paper, and tissue paper) to allow students to construct a craft that coordinates with their book/ movie pair!
Over the past two years this has been a great time not only for our students, but our parents as well!
In addition to our students engaging in the read alouds, activities and movies, we invite parents to come in, win raffle prizes (such as new mugs with hot chocolate and spoons to sweeten the deal!!) and learn how to structure a read aloud! They then get to spend time reading with their student, and assisting in the craft! In this way we not only celebrate the hard work our students have done over the past semester, but set parents up to make sure students are continuing to learn over winter break!
