I work at a year-round special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in New York City. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch, and more than 90% receive public assistance.
My students have exceptional abilities, and with the proper accommodations and modifications, they truly thrive in our school setting.
These kids are afforded smaller classroom ratios, personalized attention, and a myriad of specially certified providers that assist in their overall development.
My Project
My students would love to see the phenomenal Broadway show "Company," Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s groundbreaking musical comedy. Here's the rub: It’s Bobbie’s 35th birthday party, but all her friends keep asking, Why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man and isn’t it time to settle down and start a family? As Bobbie searches for answers, she discovers why being single, being married, and being alive in 21st-Century New York could drive a person crazy.
Taking my pupils on a field trip gives them a chance to work on displaying appropriate behavior in public, a particular challenge for my special education population.
I will also be able to teach them about theater etiquette, a skill that is new to them.
Most students at our school cannot afford field trips without assistance. They live in group homes, shelters, low-income housing, and foster homes, so it's impossible to do this on their own.
