I teach sixth-grade social studies in an inner-city public middle school. A large majority of my 98 students receive free and reduced lunch and go home to less than ideal situations. For many, school is a safe warm place for them to come each day to learn. I hope to provide them with the life skills and education they need to be able to reach their fullest potential.
Our school is severely lacking in the most basic classroom resources limiting my ability to create innovative learning experiences for my students.
I want to teach lessons and engage students in projects that are unique and interesting, and that will meet the needs of all types of learners. In order to do this, I must have the necessary materials, but these are just not affordable for my school or my student population.
My Project
Our team students are about to begin a group community service project and are in need of materials to accomplish this task. In small groups they will research, write, discuss and convince others to support a chosen cause. This will require a large amount of prepping and planning.
Having supplies like posters, sticky notes and markers will allow students to be organized and productive throughout this process.
We will be guiding students to work together while remaining on task and focused. These materials will be essential to support them during the completion of the project. In addition it will give them the opportunity to create some amazing visuals to share!
