We are a small rural Alaska school located on an island. Our small town has only 200 people and 15 students K-12. The students love to be outdoors and out on the water. We strive to be creative in giving all students a well rounded educational experience. Every community member is known and contributes to our school. Students know that the school is a community center and love to put on events.
Our students are involved in all aspects of school planning, fundraising, curriculum, and gardening.
Being far from stores we have included gardening and greenhouse production as a way of getting fresh produce to families. Fresh produce is only available a couple times a month to our community. Students love to try new vegetables when they both plan and harvest what to grow.
My Project
The seeds for this project will help students grow lettuce year round in our greenhouse and nutrition garden. Our Southeast Alaska community does not have access to fresh produce and these supplies help us fill that need. Your contribution helps student entrepreneurs grow their current operation.
Students solve community nutrition needs while gaining experiential skills.
Students have learned to appreciate new foods and have become advocates for healthy habits. All curriculum is enhanced through learning opportunities in an outdoor setting. Students lead out in planning for community needs and annual garden sale. These plants will be be used both in home and community gardens.
