Community Impact! Marine Debris Tracker & Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count
Help me give my students tools participate in citizen science projects that help their community! We will learn chemistry and biology through real science participation in the Marine Debris Monitoring Project and Sanctuary Ocean Count for humpback whales.
Last year, I missed my students! We spent a full year learning virtually last school year, with a few students coming in on Fridays to engage in socially distant activities during the spring. I teach a grade 4 and 5-grade loop, andmy students have grown so much this year! My students are creative, thoughtful and engaged in collaborative learning this year. They are full of questions! My inquisitive students are ready for more hands-on science labs where they ask questions, observe, documents, measure and wonder. I know they absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! This grant will help me engage my students this year by augmenting readings with hands on supplies. Our virtual year last year challenged my teaching in so many ways, and I am ready to engage my students in labs that extend into observing and exploring in our community!
My Project
Students have the ability to make true impacts on their world while they learn how to be a positive force in their communities! As a part of our learning next semester, students will participate in Citizen Science learning that contributes to local and global science data.
Students will explore chemistry and matter through participation in the global Citizen Science Marine Debris Tracker project.
Through this project they will collect data about marine pollution, document the mass of plastics and other micro-marine debris, clean up marine debris so it does not enter our food web, and also collect data on water and soil quality/nutrients (runoff is important for protecting Hawaii's Reefs).
Students will explore data collection and biology through participation in the Citizen Science The Sanctuary Ocean Count which monitors humpback whale populations in the Hawaii islands. During this unit, students will learn about their connection to ecosystems in Hawaii, including the flow of energy and nutrients in the food web. This field science activity is in collaboration with mentoring the K-1 students to observe, document, and build pictographs.
Students will learn to be empowered by having personal impacts on their island, they will develop observation skills, practice collecting and documenting data, and become contributors to real science.
