Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school serves 1,800 students from all over LAUSD. Our students are a mixture of cultures, languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This year my 9th grade biology students are learning the value of composting, recycling, and organic agriculture to reduce waste that ends up in landfills; as well as helping members in our local community by donating to non-profit organizations food grown in our school garden.
During a time when global governments are trying to problem solve the detriments to our world from agricultural run-off, carbon emissions, increasing food prices due to climate change affecting food production, and homelessness due to loss of jobs due to the pandemic, biology students are learning to be more mindful of how we use urban land and how we support our local community.
With the support that you can provide us my students will grow herbs, vegetables, and fruits that will feed community members in need. We are grateful to all of you for your support in the process of learning, producing, and sharing that this project will allow students to experience.
My Project
This project serves many purposes and helps teach students the following:
1.
the biochemistry plants need to grow healthy, which includes cycling of matter and composition of nutrients in soil,
2. photosynthesis, as it supports carbon sequestering that helps reduce greenhouse gases,
3. the energy and macromolecules we consume for cell function,
4. reduction of carbon footprint through local food production,
5. supporting community needs through permaculture,
6. recycling of organic matter through composting,
7. and recapturing rainwater to reduce loss of water in an urban communities.
- This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn biology concepts hands-on.
