My class is a Pre-K ASD classroom. I am a first year teacher and am starting out with nothing! ASD students truly benefit from sensory objects and different type of learning tools than general education students. I want to transform my classroom into a room that makes these students feel safe and ready to learn. I have big plans for these kiddos and can not wait to get started! Please help me help my kiddos learn and get ready for Kindergarten!
This year for social skills, I am focusing on teaching my students all about community helpers so that they are able to identify community helpers out in the our community. Autistic and other ESE children sometimes do not know how to ask for help, so I wanted to teach my students who to look for in the community if they need help. I have a dramatic play area in the corner of my room with only two costumes on the rack. My kiddos will use these costumes to learn about that community member while having fun. I plan on focusing on one community member a week so they will be in and out of these costumes a ton. Visuals are everything with ASD students, so instead of just showing them a photo of a community helper, I would like them to play the part of that community member.
Help me give my students the opportunity to learn through play!
