Amazing and diverse. Many have lived through or are living through experiences that are financially and emotionally challenging for even adults. They are endlessly resilient.
My students are DACA families.
They are the grandchildren of lifelong residents of our great city. They are the sisters and brothers of countless brave soldiers serving our country.
They are also struggling to get to stay in their homes after job losses, they are trying to eat one good meal each day when they should have three, and they are still full of desire to learn and be better.
My students stop learning music after grade 4. They have no access to live music and we are such a diverse community with so much to offer.
A community drum circle pulls in the power and strength of my students, their cultures, and our community to make us one.
They will use their bodies, small instruments, and drums from all over the world to create music. Learning how layers of sound and all making same and different sounds to create an amazing single sound allows students to feel connected to each other- WE NEED MUSIC IN OUR LIVES!!! Students will work in smaller groups and in one final large circle.
