Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many times a day my students meet me at the carpet for mini-lessons and class meetings.
I teach second grade.
I have 22 students of varying levels in reading and math with different strengths and areas in need of improvement. At our district we teach Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Students come to the carpet for a 7-10 minute mini-lesson and then go out to independent practice at their level. At the same time many of my students are struggling with a plethora of social, emotional, and physical issues including and not limited to ADHD, dyslexia, an incarcerated parent, the loss of a parent, and low socioeconomic status. Therefore, we have daily class meetings to discuss school wide and classroom expectations and to compliment each other on hard work and kindness.
My Project
All these activities take place on the floor. The students are currently asked to sit on a scrap piece of carpet from my sister's house that she was going to throw away when she was remodeling. The edges are held together with duct tape. A new carpet would inspire more openness and provide a comfortable and neat place to learn.
I've been working hard at building a community in my classroom with my diverse students.
Surprising them with a new carpet will excite them and help them feel more like a community.
