My students are amazing! They live in a low economic rural area but don't let that stop their opportunity to dream and succeed. They amaze me every day by learning both online and in-person during these challenging times. They are becoming life long learners and constantly ask questions to make their learning more meaningful. They show up every day ready to catch their dreams. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many classrooms are in a remote learning environment. This will be a new approach to teaching that will surely present many challenges as well as opportunities to innovate. Having choices in the setting, safety, and content will be beneficial to all the needs of our students. Students will be able to bloom socially, emotionally, and academically with this new platform.
Students and families (K-12) and teachers will be working together to do whatever it takes to learn this year!
My Project
During these times of struggle with COVID-19, I am planning ahead for the future, especially as students are realizing how difficult it is to make music without the company of others. In Africa, music and drumming are not just a medium for creative performance, but they serve as a stage for teaching ethics, life skills, societal roles, and community bonds.
I want to give my students the space to be creative and deepen community bonds.
We will be ready to continue drumming in and out of the classroom!
In my mindful classroom, students use music to create a calm and inviting space. We use music and rhythm inspired by stories, poems, and even their own creative wondering. I try to provide as many sounds from various instruments as possible. With this program, our students will not only be learning to play exciting new music, but they will be learning discipline, respect, and unity through music.
With mindfulness, we can start to overcome these stresses together. At home, in school, and through online learning, students will be motivated to practice mindfulness by the tones and vibrations the drums create. Instruments will be available for individual check out and used during instructional time.
