My Project

The AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program at our school strives to inform underserved students of the various post-secondary opportunities available to them through colleges and universities. AVID is a college-preparatory program for students who are focused on attending college, but who may have some barriers to getting there.

Many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college, face financial barriers to post-secondary education (most have been facing housing challenges and most qualify for free/reduced lunch), or require a little extra push to keep college at the forefront of their goals.

67% of the student body at MHS belong to ethnic groups other than white. There are over 30 languages spoken at our high school.

Students in AVID grow together for four years throughout their high school experience. They become close friends and their best support system. Being surrounded by their like-minded, motivated AVID family for one period each day helps them persevere and succeed throughout high school. Help us grow this bond and social emotional learning through community building games and art. With the games, students will learn to interact with each other, practice better communication skills through teaching younger students how to play the games in a group, and come together as a whole school in a fun way to build community. According to research, using games in the classroom can help increase student participation, foster social and emotional learning, and motivate students to take risks.
