One of the greatest things about my students is that each one of them is unique. Our school has a very diverse population of children from varying backgrounds, many of whom speak multiple languages and come from countries around the world. Because each student is unique, I strive to provide learning experiences that will benefit each individual. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and by creating a space that is safe, comfortable and engaging, I promote a sense of community in the art room and our school as a whole. Art is a language the whole world speaks and watching my students make connections to each other through art is incredible to watch.
My Project
Each year I bring a group of students to paint a boring old structure in the community to make it more beautiful! In the past we've painted traffic signal boxes, murals at the town hall and a buddy bench on the playground. My students have such a great sense of pride when they create something the whole community can see and enjoy. It is so important for students to understand the positive effects art can have in a community, so if you are able to, please help me buy the paints to give my students the opportunity to create a new community art project this year.
