Community Activists Reaching Everyone

My students need MetroCards to commute to and from community service activities on the weekends, for three months. The MetroCards are 4 dollars each at 40 students per month. Also, the students need funding for food to eat during the community service days.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Early in the year, we were fortunate enough to have NY Cares come in for their annual "Revitalize a School Day". Some students participated in the day's events and others returned to school on Monday to see the new amazingly colorful, warm environment, and they were in complete awe. Not only was it now a wonderful learning community, but to think that strangers gave their free time to help our school community was amazing. This started our pay it forward idea. A few weeks later, we then took part in an annual Teensgiving event where 35 students were at a park at 8:30 am on a cold, Sunday morning doing hard labor. The elderly couple who we helped cried when we left because they were so thankful. This is how CARE, "Community Activists Reaching Everyone" started.

This student run club chooses a cause a month to raise funds to donate to, such as AIDS or Darfur. In addition, the kids look forward to our monthly weekend community service activities. This month, we will be running a Chanukah party for little kids. Some future projects include soup kitchens, trips to the Ronald McDonald House and the AIDS Walk.

The problem is that the activities are on Sundays and the students are giving up their free time, but do not have the money to pay to commute to and from the events. The $4 per child is not something our students can afford. Additionally, they have to bring their own lunch. The cost is about $10 per child per day and many cannot afford this. I hate the idea that they are missing out on giving back to others because they can't handle the financial burden this places on their own families. With school budget cuts, our school cannot fund these events. The fundraisers we run in the school go to the causes we want to support and there just isn't enough money to go around.

A large majority of my students live in the projects and come from families who are struggling financially. I have been in complete amazement at the positive response to community service, especially considering the financial situation of our students. We have such a unique student body and this club has been such a success. The only way we can continue is with funding. Each month we plan to take on another cause and with your help, we can continue to do this.
